Artist StatementMarbled
Matt Williams This year for my Winter Art Show I wanted to make a set of marbled bowls that are both functional and decorative. My family recently moved into a new house here in Richmond with marble countertops and we did not have any dishes to decorate them with. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and make some. Throughout the semester Ms. Sanyour encouraged me to explore different marbling techniques. First, I did a drizzle technique where I dipped the bowl into a large bucket of white glaze and then drizzled black glaze over top of it. The next technique involved shaving cream. I laid out the shaving cream and the poured black glaze into it and swirled it around. Next, I rolled my bowl through the shaving cream until the bowl was covered entirely. Finally, I washed the shaving cream off of the bowls and then glazed them in a clear glaze. The finished product looked amazing with the contrasting marks of white and black swirls. I am very proud of what I was able to accomplish this year and I am ready to continue my ceramic journey next year!
